The Lighthouse of Alexandroupoli is the true brand and symbol of the city. It is located in the center, next to the port and the waterfront stores. It was built in 1850 by the French Society of Lighthouses and Lanterns of the Mediterranean, following the conclusion of a convention with the then Turkish government, to facilitate ships during the operations of entry and exit from the Dardanelles Strait. It is 27 meters high and is one of the few lighthouses with surveillance still existing today.
