The Castle of Levanto is referred to by different names (Castle of San Giorgio, Castle of Monale, Castle of the Malaspina), but you will not be able to confuse this mighty building atop a hillock south of the historic center with other buildings. The castle we can see today is a 16th-century reconstruction of an ancient 12th-century manor house. It was used over the centuries as a fortress, the seat of the captaincy of Levanto, and a prison; it is currently privately owned and is opened to visitors only on special occasions. It is quadrangular in shape and has a circular tower; according to local legends it is connected by underground passages to the beach below and the Church of the Annunziata.
