Belfast Castle is a castle located on Cave Hill, north of downtown Belfast, Northern Ireland. Built in the 19th century, the castle has a fascinating history and panoramic views of the city of Belfast. The construction of the castle was commissioned by the third Marquis of Donegall, who owned the area around Cave Hill. The construction of the castle was entrusted to Scottish architect John Lanyon, who designed a Scottish baronial style building with towers, battlements, and slit windows.During World War II, Belfast Castle was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers before being returned to the Donegall family after the war. In the 1960s, the castle was donated to Belfast City Council, which restored it and opened it to the public.Today, Belfast Castle houses a restaurant and a museum, where antique objects, paintings, and original castle furniture can be seen. The view from the castle's observation deck offers breathtaking views of the city of Belfast and the coast.A legend concerning Belfast Castle says that the third Marquis of Donegall had a trusted servant named John Shaw. John Shaw was said to have been charged with protecting the Donegall family's gold and jewels, which were hidden in Cave Hill. When the marquis died, the servant disappeared with the gold and was never seen again. Legend has it that to this day the ghost of John Shaw wanders the hill in search of the hidden treasure.
