Ambohimanga is the fortified village of Madagascar. It was the ancient capital of the country, here lived the Malagasy royalty. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. This royal palace was the summer residence of the royal house from 1787 to 1810. It has nothing to do with the European palaces of the same period but it is still fascinating for its diversity. Inside there are some royal tombs, the bathtubs in which they used to bathe, the King’s palace and the Queen’s palace. The entrance to the village of Ambohimanga, marked by one of the seven large traditional gates that protect the inaccessible top of the hill, from the top of which opens a wonderful view of Antananarivo.
