The Alexandria National Museum is located in the heart of historic downtown Alexandria and is housed in a neoclassical building that was once the High Court of Justice Building.The museum houses an extensive collection of archaeological artifacts that tell the story of the city of Alexandria from its founding in 331 B.C. to modern times. Visitors can admire ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman artifacts, including statues, sarcophagi, coins, jewelry, and everyday objects.The museum also has a section devoted to contemporary art, with an extensive collection of works by Egyptian and international artists.Among the most important works on display in the museum are the famous Rosetta Stone, which was discovered in Rosetta in 1799 and made it possible to decipher Egyptian hieroglyphics, and the collection of statues of famous ancient philosophers and scholars, including Plato, Aristotle and Socrates.
