It was an Arab fortress and then a fishing village, today it is one of the most visited places in the Algarve by tourists. It is in a beautiful high position on the cliffs surrounding the sandy beach. Thanks to the tourism that discovered it in the second half of the 20th century, it has developed rapidly.
The Vila velha, old town, is located high up with characteristic narrow and winding streets. The fishermen’s quarter is at the side of the beach. Among the rock formations of the coast there are coves with sandy beaches frequented during the summer months and the Gruta do Xorino, a cave that can be reached by boat.
