Akureyrarkirkja, also known as the Akureyri Church, is one of the main attractions in Akureyri, a town in northern Iceland. It is an art deco Lutheran church designed by Icelandic architect Guðjón Samúelsson and built between 1940 and 1942.The church is located on Krossanes Hill, from which there is a beautiful view of the city and the Eyjafjörður Fjord. Its architecture features a mix of styles, including art deco and Icelandic national style, with elements inspired by Icelandic nature and culture. The interior of the church is quite restrained, with white walls and colored windows that create an effect of light and shadow. The church also houses a pipe organ, one of the largest in Iceland. The church tower, about 23 meters high, houses four bells and is one of Akureyri’s landmarks. It is possible to climb the tower to enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Eyjafjörður fjord. The Akureyri Church is considered one of the masterpieces of Icelandic architecture and is a must-see for tourists visiting the town. The church is open to the public every day except during church services, and admission is free.
