The sanctuary of Pierno stands on a plateau 960 metres above sea level, at the immediate foot of the mountain of the same name (1268 m.) in the territory of San Fele (PZ), from which it is less than 10 km away. The mountain, characterized by its white rocks of karstic origin, is covered by a thick vegetation of oaks and chestnut trees and is close to Mount S. Croce (1427 m.) also covered by a thick vegetation and rich in springs of crystal clear water.
The primitive chapel, which became small because of the influx of the faithful, was enlarged between 1187 and 1197 in Romanesque-Norman style, under the direction of the architect Sarolo, the most prestigious of the time, who was chosen by Giliberto II of Balvano who intended to make it the burial place for his family.
The façade is in Romanesque style and the portal has mosaic decorations with white stones and lava.
